WINGRAVES of the WIDE WORLD

The WINGRAVE surname appears to originate in Buckinghamshire England and may trace its origins back to  John Wilemont alias John de Wengrave. John was the horsed servant (garcio) of Will. atte Putte de Berkhampstede, the Sheriff's clerk and was therefore an official. This is from the Rolls From the Office of Sheriff of Beds & Bucks 1332-1334.

The WINGRAVE variation of the name survives today. At some point this surname also became WINGROVE. Of  these two variations, the WINGROVE surname far outnumbers those bearing Wingrave.

Both surname variations are to be found throughout the world. This portion of the site deals primarily with WINGRAVE WORLD WIDE.

Another all occurrences surname site is devoted to WINGROVE WORLD WIDE

I wish to acknowledge the assistance of George Farr
                 and his Farr-Wingrave Genealogy
It was his gedcoms that formed the early beginnings of my separate search for those with the WINGRAVE surname

There appears to be a growing amount of examples which may point to a strong connection between these two surnames as well as a third surname that may have preceded these - WENGRAVE

Wingrove Cottage.

The present village of WINGRAVE in Buckinghamshire, UK has a long and illustrious past. At some point in the 1600's the name was changed from the village of WINGROVE. Records in the Public Records Office also refer to the village as Wingrove. Records also exist in the same location from the time of Richard II which refer to the village of Wengrave as well

So just as the village may have undergone names changes throughout the years - it seems reasonable to suspect that the surname has likely seen change as well.

but so are many other unconnected families

bullet     The other factors that come into consideration are
          -  the difficulty is distinguishing the letters 'o' and 'a'
in early handwriting, as well as present day script.

          -  dialect can lead to a similarity of pronunciation in a locale

I believe that the answer to the connection between all of these variations is yet to be firmly established. As the surname WENGRAVE has not been carried into the twentieth century, a similar fate may await WINGRAVE. The connections will be lost and looked upon simply as spelling errors rather than as an evolution of the surname.
